HUMANITY IS FACING A DIFFICULT TRUTH
Humanity is facing a ‘difficult truth’, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said just ahead of World Meteorological Day, marked on Thursday – the damage already being caused by climate change is making our planet uninhabitable,” reports UN News on 23 March 2023.
“Every year of insufficient action to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius drives us closer to the brink, increasing systemic risks and reducing our resilience against climate catastrophe” UN Chief Antonio Guterres warned against the intensifying heatwaves, droughts, flooding and wildfires occurring worldwide.
It’s time to end the relentless – and senseless – war on nature and deliver the sustainable future that our climate needs and our children and grandchildren deserve,” he appealed to all the world to ensure the early warning systems against climate disasters and to protect every person in the world as promised in the last World Meteorological day.

“People in Africa, South Asia, South and Central America and small island states are 15 times more likely to die from climate disasters. These deaths are preventable. The evidence is clear: early warning systems are one of the most effective risk reduction and climate adaptation measures to reduce disaster mortality and economic losses,” said UN Chief in the UN Advisory Panel of leaders of UN agencies, multilateral development banks, humanitarian organizations, civil society, insurance and IT companies held on 21 March 2023 for ensuring the ‘Early Warnings for All’ becomes a reality for everyone, everywhere before 2027.
“A range of new and pre-existing innovative financing solutions are required to implement the plan to protect every person on Earth. These include a scaling up of the Climate Risk Early Warning Systems(CREWS) Initiative, Systematic Observations Financing Facility (SOFF) and accelerated investment programmes of climate funds such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Adaptation Fund and key Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) as well as other innovative new financial instruments, “ says the Press Release issued by World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) at New York on 21 March 2023.
